 Editorial Reviews

Book Description
For this new, sixth edition the authors have revised and updated it to take account of the growing emphasis on self-managed learning and the developing role of the training specialist as facilitator and advisor. New material has been included on the role and influence of the line manager, experiential learning, knowledge management and the future of on-line learning.

The authors provide a critical overview of the national framework and draw out the fundamental issues and principles before discussing the practical details of needs assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating training.
All these themes are combined in a book ideally suited to students of employee development across a broad range of courses, including the IPD's Professional Qualification Scheme, Training and Development NVQ qualifications at all levels, HND and first degrees with a business or administrative content, and MBA and other postgraduate programmes. The analyses of topical issues make it invaluable for updating practitioners, while the exercises, cases and suggestions for further reflection, discussion and reading provide a unique resource for continuing self-development.

Synopsis
Updated for the sixth edition, this text provides a critical overview of the national training framework and discusses the practical aspects of assessing needs, planning, implementing and evaluating training. All these themes include exercises, cases and suggestions for further reading. Topics covered include: the significant emphasis on learning rather than training in today's world; the importance of role management; an analysis of the whole management debate; the growing emphasis on self-managed learning and competence-based assessment; and cost-benefit analysis of training, benchmarking and the learning organization.

Editorial Reviews

A useful source but can be difficult to read., November 15, 2001

Reviewer:
A reader from England

I'm a student studying for a business degree with HR modules and this book was on the recommended reading list. I have found the book to have a lot of useful information and provides a good source of background details. However, I have found the layout is not particularly user friendly as it is quite small print without many paragraphs or diagrams to assist in explanation. The summarys at the end of each chapter provide an excellent synopsis of the chapter. There are also questions which can be used to reinforce the knowledge learnt in the chapter.
